Mrs. Dane, Brien, Kevin and families I was so sorry to learn from my mother that your father had died. A long-time friend of my father and the publisher of the newspaper where I had my first full-time job, he was a positive and professional influence in my early career. In more recent years our paths often crossed in the condo recycling room when Tim and I were visiting my mother. Even these short encounters were interesting discussions on topical issues, and on the state of Canadian newspapers. He was a gentleman and a professional. I know how much you will miss him. Wendy and Tim

On behalf of Bayshore Broadcasting I wish to acknowledge the loss of a strong and caring voice for Canada's newspaper industry. It was a privilege to know Bill at a time he exercised the enormous responsibility of running a community daily with quiet efficiency and humility. His amazing play-by-play talent laid the foundation for excellence in sports on CFOS. Truly one of Owen Sound's great men.

Dear Kevin, Susan, Riley, Tarah and Erin, I have been reading about Bill over the last couple of days and although I did not know him he sure sounds like the kind of Dad anyone would wish for. A man who was equally passionate for his country, his community and his family. I know there are no words I can say to take away the pain of losing a man like Bill, but I wanted you all to know that your Walton family loves you and is praying for your strength and peace at this very sad time. We hope that over the coming days as visitors come and go, you are touched by the many people who not only have come to say farewell to Bill but who have come to comfort you. With deepest sympathy, Monique Delorme on behalf of the members of the Stewardship Committee, Walton Memorial United Church

Helen and family Sorry to read of Bill's passing and hope it was pain free. Can't believe he would take off just as the Blue Jays have a shot--dare we say it--at the World Series. But perhaps he has gone to place where he can make sure that happens. Fond condolences Joyce and Clark

Dear Helen, Brien and Kevin: You didn't really work for Bill, you just had a lot of fun working with him. My decision to accept the job as editor of The Sault Star was not based on moving up from city editor at The Edmonton Journal to editor at The Star, it was based mainly on Bill's personality, his enthusiasm for and love of our craft that I shared. I will never forget the opportunity he gave me and the fun we had in editorial conferences, which usually opened with a discussion of the Maple Leafs or St. Louis Cardinals, his favourite teams. I owe him big time. He was a great newspaperman, great family man and great community supporter. He was, in all aspects, a gentleman. Barbara and I pass on our deepest condolences.

Was saddened to learn of the death of Bill – my favorite from among four publishers with whom I had the good fortune to work for during my many years at the Sault Star. He was a great supporter of the “Newspaper in Education” program which he had assigned to me. I have many fond memories of how he treated the work staff, his friendliness, consideration, etc etc. A true gentleman! I’ve recently turned 84 and I still remember our working days together. That not only speaks well for my memory, but his unmatched qualities are unforgettable. My most sincere and deepest sympathy. Glorya Nanne

I was saddened by the news of Bill's death. I first met him when I came to Owen Sound to work at The Sun Times as a still-green reporter. I remember when I said "Hello Mr. Dane" he told me to call him Bill. That's the way he was. He might have been the boss, but he didn't lord it over anyone. I liked him very much. My condolences to all of you.
