We just returned from our southern winter holiday and was devouring a recent Globe and Mail when I saw an obituary for a Joan Watson. Being from Dauphin I knew a Joan Watson but was shocked when I realized it was your (David, Roger, Richard) sister - my condolences. I'm retired in Thornbury, ON (near Owen Sound) and would have paid my respects in person but the service was over by the time we returned to Canada. As the younger of the family I did not know her as well as I did you guys but I can only imagine how proud of her you and your parents must of been in seeing her progress with her horn so far. Once again, my condolences.

Joan's wonderful sound was as warm as her spirit. Such beauty of tone, of person, finally of soul.....Shared time may have been years ago, but I loved her truly then and do now - her presence undimmed. And her smile! Scott and family - you are in my thoughts.

Dear Joan, so many special memories... Thank you for showing me what a generous heart looks like ~ I remember it was my first time staying with you in Toronto and without hesitation, you lend me your *BMW* to drive to an 'Angela' lesson. Then there were all the lessons you gifted me when preparing for trumpet auditions and paddle boating chats at your brother Roger's place here in Calgary, not to mention Roger also generously letting us take his new Mercedes SLS out for a 'test drive' : ) Your natural sense of self confidence has always inspired me as you shared a few times that if someone told you 'it couldn't be done', you would go right out there and learn to do it, be it or play it! Ultimately, it was your consistent art of balancing gratitude and appreciation with tremendous inner strength, determination and courage that has created such a beautiful tapestry of memories that will continue to sing in my heart. Scott, Max, Joel and family, sending you deepest heartfelt sympath

Joan was a mentor to me as a child growing up in Dauphin, Mb. She didn't know it of course but I aspired to become a brilliant musician just like her. I loved coming to her parents' house for my saxophone lessons with her Dad, who was also our family dentist. She was usually practising in another room or coming in to ask about some challenging music theory question. We played in the town band but the pinnacle was to be in her Dad's jazz band. Vern played lead and I was thrilled to be on second. Joan played horn in the trombone section and as I recollect, it was a swingin great time! I followed in her footsteps in so many ways....summers at the Peace Gardens music camp, going on their European tours. I even applied to U of Vic music school because she went there. She was so generous and thoughtful. I called her to say I was moving out there and she arranged for me to move into her old apartment.

Joan was a few years older than me so we only knew each through music but I looked up to her. She was an inspiration at a time when there were few role models for girls. Later, our paths would occasionally cross and she would always be so friendly and willing to get together. She seemed to be that same lovely girl I'd known as a child. She was an accomplished musician and a terrific person. I am grateful to have known her. At this sorrowful time, our thoughts are with her family.

I wrote the following about Joan at a recent International Horn Day… Long before he became Joan’s life partner, my friend and colleague Scott Irvine warned me that a fabulous new horn player was moving to Toronto some years ago. What an understatement! What he couldn’t tell me at the time was what a wonderful human being she was as well. I have played with Joan in numerous ensembles and settings since her arrival, and have had the great pleasure to play 2nd horn to her at the Canadian Opera Company for the past 15 years or so. Since I first met this unique and dynamic woman I have experienced wonderful musical collaborations, mutual admiration and respect, and a great life-long friendship. Joan exhibits a dedication and passion for her art unlike anyone I have ever met. She does not simply play ‘the horn’, she makes nothing but ‘music’ with every phrase and every note.
Thu, March 19, 2015  -
Having played principal horn myself I am aware of the demands of that position, and through the years at the opera I have been constantly awed by Joan’s playing, and always think to myself… “How does she do that?!” I look forward to many more years with Joan making music, smiles, and memories… Alas, those years are at an end now, and the smiles must come from the many happy memories already made. While the music may go on, no one can ever replace her.

Dear Scott, Max, Joel and family, I was deeply saddened to hear of Joan's recent Passing, I wish to send out my most heartfelt and truest sympathies at this time of loss for your family. Joan was not only a friend to me,, but also A mentor, horn teacher, landlord, passionate artist/coach/musician and person who's guiding force, helped shape the person I have become today. My first meeting and lessons 22 years ago, were at Lake Manitouwabing, Parry Sound, ON at IMC when I was 16. then again, through my studies with her later at the RCM in Toronto, and onwards in my lifetime, will forever be appreciated and etched with a smile in my memory and forever, on my music stand. She always made everything sound and seem "Effortless", "Fun" and "Easy"! May you all find solace & comfort in knowing how special, loving and caring she was, to have touched the lives of such of so many wonderful people, from all walks of life, around this great world of ours. God Bless.

Dear Scott and all of Joan's family Needless to say I was stunned when I heard about Joan's passing. We performed together in the horn section for 10 years in the Victoria Symphony and she was always striving to find the essence of the music. Over the years Joan has remained a good friend, mentor and inspiration about life. I do not know of a person that is more interested in life, music , teaching, philosophy than Joan. The world is a lesser place now that she is no longer with us. My heart felt empathy to all who are so close to her, as your loss is the greatest. Peter Burris

I am horrified to discover that Joan has passed on. She was a wonderful person - a very special lady. Since we are in Italy at the moment, we cannot attend her funeral. I remember when I first met Joan. It was years ago at an orchestra conference where we each represented our orchestras - hers in Victoria and mine in Toronto. She was very interested in how we did things. Later, she phoned to tell me that she was moving to Toronto and we arranged to meet for dinner near RTH where I had a concert later. It was great and afterwards I opened the trunk of my car to discover that I had left my cello at home. Fortunately it arrived by cab in time for the concert. Occupied by the 6,000 things that every musician has to do every day, we were unable to maintain the contact, but when she finally joined the TSO it was great to see her regularly. She was, of course, a special artist and a terrific person. I remember Scott as well from the days when he used to walk regularly to Ontario Place. My

To dear Scott and Joan's sons; The shock of Joan's passing and sadness that she is no longer with us is felt deeply by all who knew her in music. She was not only a pillar of the artistic community in Toronto, and a professional to admire and look up to, but someone who tried to be helpful in any way she could. I also admired her dedication as a mom, and she was a role model for women who do it all. Lots of love to you and our thoughts are with you.

So many memories have been flooding my mind, since I heard of Joanie's passing. We were friends for around 50 years. We met through the International Music Camp. God had blessed me with the closest thing I had to a sister, back then. We enjoyed so many summers together. She was such a happy person and we had many fun and funny times together over the years. It wasn't always easy to keep up with each other with her being in Canada and me being in Indiana. But when we spoke on the phone or actually saw each other it was as if those miles and long times in between never mattered. We picked right up where we left off. My heart is broken right now, knowing that she isn't just a phone call away. But, my heart goes out even more to her family. Scott, who was, I'm sure, one of the few people who could keep up with the many facets of Joanie. He could identify with her musical side, her business side and her fun side. I'm sure he was her soul mate and a rock for her when she needed

From the Westben Arts Festival Theatre Board of Directors - Joan Watson was an amazing woman and a wonderful horn player , so inspiring and beautiful with a great sense of humour, and dedicated to bringing music to children. She was a valuable member of the Westben Board of Directors and played many times at The Barn. After one concert she took the time to explain to one of my grand daughters why she had her hand in the horn. We still talk about it with them. A lovely lady. John Bennett, Board Secretary

While I didn't know Joan well, I had huge respect and love for her playing and approach to music-making. She was simply the best horn player around and, not to sound to "corny", was a dedicated servant to great music throughout her career. She's left us way too soon and Teri and I would like to extend heartfelt condolences to dear Scott and the rest of Joan's family, as well as her many friends and colleagues. What a remarkable woman. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. Love, Larry.

This is very sad news. I had the pleasure of working with Joan when I guest conducted the Victoria Symphony. Joan was principal horn. It was immediately obvious that she was an outstanding player and a delightful colleague. We worked together later on many occasions with the CJRT Orchestra in Toronto. She will be greatly missed in the musical life of Toronto. Please convey my condolences to her family.

Fran and I were most saddened to hear of Joan's death. We knew her as fellow students at UVic starting in 1971 and were so impressed with her talent, discipline and ultimately, her artistry. She was a supportive friend and remained so even in the too few times we communicated over the years. She seemed to grow and grow as a musician and as a human being in family and community. God bless her soul.

My sincerest condolences to Scott and Joan's family. As a former TSO colleague and a COC subscriber for many years, I was stunned and saddened to hear of your loss. Joan will certainly be missed but the memories of all she did for the music (and horn) community--students, colleagues, listeners, and friends--wherever she was, will linger on.

To Scott and all Joan's family and friends: I am absolutely gutted by this sad news. As a conductor, it was a great honor to work with Joan. She was a wonderful musician, who took her work VERY seriously. As if that were not enough, she was a terrific MENSCH, who made me feel welcome and appreciated in Canada. Scott, I have always cherished the evening I spent with the two of you in your home. It is very rare that a conductor gets a private invitation. Thank-you and thanks, Joan. Much love to you all in these difficult times, David.

To Scott and all Joan's family - I was thinking of my mom on her March 12 b'day and her passing 12 yrs. ago, not knowing that Joan was ill and leaving us. She was wonderful to be around and musicians were doubly blessed. i've often quoted her love of music: "I can't believe they pay me to do this." So I thank Joan for her beauty of self and having exploited her talent for the benefit of all of us. Love you Joan!

I am sad to learn of Joan's passing. She had an easygoing and friendly manner and was invariably positive and encouraging. She made me feel as though I were her only student; such was the degree interest that came from her. Joan was the teacher who truly helped me let the Horn Genie out of the bottle! My condolences go to Scott, her sons and family. I won't forget her.

It's so hard to find the right words. Joan was such a wonderful and beautiful person inside and out. I learned so much from her as a horn player. She was a mentor, friend, colleague, wife, mother.....someone who was taken far too soon. She lived a full life, playing her horn up to the end with only finishing at the opera only weeks earlier. Superwoman!!! Thank-you for everything Joan, you were one of the most amazing people I have ever known. All of us that had the good fortune to have her as a teacher whether in school or private lessons will carry on your legacy. The music community is in great mourning at this time, and to Scott and her sons...know that we all have your backs. We are all here for you.

I first met Joan over 20 years ago at U of T faculty of music. She was my very first horn teacher. It was the first time that anyone actually taught what playing the horn was about. She was always very upbeat, encouraging, understanding and positive. Recently, I got in touch with her again. Her teaching and playing inspired me to be a better musician. She was my mentor, my teacher, my friend and my guiding light. I would e-mail her at times with some musical questions and she would so quickly answer back. I would really, really miss her. She was a very beautiful person both on the outside and on the inside. She really made a difference in my life. I will always remember her positivity, her spirit and her enthusiasm for her horn and her music.
